Key takeaways
- Solid-core doors feel better and block more sound than hollow-core.
- A well-hung door has an even gap around the frame and latches without lifting.
- Pre-hung doors are the easiest fix for new or badly crooked openings.
Popular styles
Shaker doors have a simple flat center panel with a square frame and fit modern and farmhouse looks. Six-panel doors are traditional, and flat or slab doors are modern. Glass-paneled and French doors let in light and open rooms visually.
The right style depends on your trim and your house.
Core and weight
Hollow-core doors are light and economical, while solid-core doors have a dense interior that adds weight, quiet and a more substantial feel. Solid wood doors are the heaviest and most expensive.
Heavier doors need three hinges and good screws into framing.
What good hanging looks like
A well-hung door has an even reveal of about an eighth of an inch on the sides and top, closes without rubbing and latches without a push. The hinges are mortised to the right depth and the jamb is plumb and shimmed.
If your doors stick or drift, the jamb may be out of plumb, and a carpenter can often correct it without replacing the door.

Quick answers
Why does my door swing open or closed on its own?
The frame is usually out of plumb. Adjusting hinges or resetting the jamb fixes it.
Do I need pre-hung doors?
For new openings or when the old frame is damaged, pre-hung is easiest. If the frame is sound, we can hang a slab.
