Trim & Built-Ins

Paint-Grade vs Stain-Grade Trim: What You Should Know

Key takeaways

  • Paint-grade trim hides joints and color variation under paint.
  • Stain-grade trim needs clean, matched wood and tight grain-aligned joints.
  • Painted trim is usually the more affordable choice.

The difference

Paint-grade trim is made to be covered, so it may use finger-jointed or MDF materials. Stain-grade trim is clear wood selected for grain and color, because stain shows everything.

That is why stained trim costs more in materials and labor.

When stain is worth it

Stained trim shines in warm, traditional or rustic rooms, in libraries and around stained doors and stair parts. A mix works too: stained doors and rails with painted trim.

If your existing trim is stained, matching it can be a challenge that we can often solve.

Finish matters

Painted trim should be primed and caulked properly with a durable satin or semi-gloss. Stained trim should be sanded evenly and sealed with a clear coat. Both look better when the carpenter leaves joints tight and surfaces smooth.

We prepare each type differently, so tell us up front which you want.

Quick answers

Can I paint stain-grade trim?

Yes, but you give up the visible grain, and it is easier to start with paint-grade trim for a painted finish.

Can I stain paint-grade trim?

Usually not well. Finger joints and fillers show under stain.
